This is my sweet tooth's favorite day of the year. No matter what, I have to have my chocolate fix on February 14th. It is the only holiday that has chocolate as its the main theme. I have fond memories of growing up and my father always giving my mom, sister and I heart shaped boxes filled with candy on this day.
I remember one year when I was in high school my boyfriend also gave me a box of candy and I decided that I was going to save it as a keepsake of our love. I'll never forget the scream my mother let out when she found it in the attic in July, full of worms. I had saved the whole thing, chocolate and all.
My daughter, whose birthday is on November 13th, told me that she always wondered why so many people have a birthday around hers. (By a strange coincidence, the neighbors on the left and right of us each had a daughter the same age, whose birthdays are on the 14th and 16th of November.) She counted back nine months and low and behold, it was Valentine's Day! That explains why champagne is also an important component of this holiday.
