One of the best things about summer in Los Angeles is the Hollywood Bowl. I went last weekend and had an incredibly wonderful time. For those not familiar with the Bowl, it is a natural amphitheater situated in the middle of Hollywood, and the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
The biggest thrill besides the music is the people watching and checking out the spread everyone is feasting on. You have everything from the most elaborate ten course meal to a four dollar hot dog bought on the premises. There's abundance of pretentious snobs who try to impress everyone with their opulent display of food but most people are there just to enjoy the evening. I can only describe it as a classy tailgate party. They take picnic to a new level and it is definitely an art form. Wine bottles outnumber water bottles. There were so many variations of salmon, that I felt I was at a salmon cook-off. I have never seen so many fabulous looking desserts in my life.
It was an exceptionally warm evening as compared to the norm when you usually need a coat, gloves and an Irish coffee to get through the evening. The three stars that were visible through the smog were shining brightly and the moon looked like someone in photoshop had made it into a gradation.
One of my very best friends is a member of the orchestra and even though security put up a fight, we were able to go on stage before the performance to see what it looks like from her view. The place holds over 17,000 people and it is very impressive to look out and see so many people having a really good time.
It was such a perfect evening. The music was endorphin producing, the food and wine intoxicating and good friends are always a joy to be around.
It ended with a fireworks display which always delights me. Fireworks at any time other than July 4th is a pleasant suprise. At the end of the evening I was so relaxed and happy it felt as if I had just had a brain massage. I could go to the Hollywood Bowl every night of the week and never tire of it.
