I had a great time exploring the different neighborhoods in Chicago and eating my way though them all.
No trip to Chicago is complete without the deep dish pizza they are famous for. I personally prefer my crust paper thin, but I did have a piece of pesto pizza that was actually quite good.
My favorite all time market was Gene's Sausage Shop and Delicatessen right in the center of Lincoln Square. This is a fabulous high end European market that makes Whole Foods look like Walmart. I only wish I could have been able to bring a suitcase full of sausage and salads home with me.
My sister and I were delighted to find some things in the deli case that our Russian grandmother used to make when we were growing up. I am so jealous that this is my daughter's neighborhood market and not mine.
Another market that I fell in love with was Fox and Obel Grocery store in downtown Chicago. Although it wasn't as interesting as Gene's it had a great variety of unique, overpriced, gourmet items. It reminded me of Dean and Deluca's in New York, but on a smaller scale.
The bakery was a pleasant surprise and is one of the best in the city. I wish I could have eaten at the cafe because it sure looked good. If you are wealthy enough to live in the neighborhood, you can surely afford to shop here.
Luckily this market is nowhere near Santa Monica, or else I would be there drooling every chance I got.
One of the most interesting restaurants was the Meatloaf Bakery in Lincoln Park. At first I thought it was a cupcake place, only to realize that they were actually little meat loafs made to look like cupcakes.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to sample any as I ran out of time and stomach space. I hope they are still in business when I return to Chicago in the fall. I ate at so many good restaurants, but in order not to embarrass my daughter anymore than I already did with my camera, I didn't take any pictures. You will just have to take my word for it, that Chicago has some of the best food in the world.
